Just an update. I've not forgotten about this, and have had a word with John about it. While his layout is nowhere near completion we thought perhaps a little article about the trains themselves might be of interest. I have to admit to being quite gobsmacked myself when I first saw John's trains. As he is a newcomer to the hobby and this is his first attempt I am amazed at his creations from bits and pieces out of the junk boxes found under the tables at toyfairs in addition to the excellent kit built models.

Wasn't there an article on modelling early 19th Century railways in one of the first SMTs?

Yes - I believe there was, but I need to hunt around to be sure - there was certainly one about an early coal mine pit head.
