Well I like it Martin and think it is well worth persevering with.
I think the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway idea is a good choice, I found it a most attractive prototype when I travelled on it last year.
I also have a soft spot for the Southwold Railway as well, another attractive line sadly no longer with us.
I shall follow this thread with interest.

Don't know what you mean Martin.
The photo in the background looks familiar. The style is very similar to some of the pubs I used to frequent in Glossop (Yes I do know what the outside of a pub looks like as well as the inside, having spent some time waiting for them to open over the years) do you know where it's from please?
I love the idea of trains threading between buildings, is the track going to be set into the street W&L style or on its own alley as a private right of way? _________________ Bob Hughes

Thanks chaps.
The track will be set into the street where it crosses Main Road, but the bit between the shop and the allotment where it joins the fiddle, and on the other side as it passes the pub into the station, will be it's own way.
The picture on the back is one I found on tinternet ages ago.. Mayang I think. As such, I don't know where it's from I'm afraid.
Although I have used the two skaledale buildings (the wheatsheaf inn is quite tiddy and I reckon more like HO or 3mm scale), I will probably scratchbuild the low relief house to replace that photo... or just use the photo! _________________ Martin Hogg

A great start, Martin. Before looking at your blog, I'd mentally placed it in Norfolk or possibly E. Yorkshire - but at least I got eastern England right!
The buildings by the station throat give the station a really good atmosphere, and the computuer visuals for the potential scenery are also interesting.
The W&L rolling stock is a good choice IMO, as it has a good presence, but is derfinitely Narrow Gauge. I look forward to seeing this one develop. |

Ballasting and much messy work done. Still more messiness to do, but today it looks like I'm getting somewhere.
In my experience (and I don't know if it's just me?) almost every layout hits a point where it all looks like it's gone t*ts up and you want to give up on it.. often a little preserverance or simply putting it away for a bit, fixes it and gets you back on track.
I had one of those moments at the weekend - bag of ash in one hand, dripping pva down my counter top, making up new swear words...
Anyhoo - some stuff on the blog

I can relate to that, Martin, as I've just got stuck with my latest project with the ballasting three-quarters done and just the difficult bit round two turnouts to complete. I may have cured myself by starting on the buildings - for which I also had a mental block. Anyway they seem to be going in the right direction and it's lifted my feelings about the whole layout. Just as well as the show debut is two weeks away and as I've negotiated next week for layout work, rather than DIY, there's hope yet! |

That is coming along very nicely.
A bit of extra weight if there is room, always seems to improve running I’ve found.
I expect you’ve done this already.

Great stuff, Martin!
Winkford is looking very atmospheric; it's got that small country town/village feel that I've seen on Layouts such as David Gander's Green End and David Taylor's Bridport Town.
I do hope that you're able to get the layout running to your satisfaction; it can be done, and I think the way it's looking will justify the effort.
All the best,

Just a suggestion, probably not one that you'd want to consider, but...
If you can't get it to run satisfactorily in OO9 is there room to lift the tracks ( )
and relay them through the same scenery as a standard gauge light railway?
It happened in real life, so not unthinkable in model form as well.
OK, putting my coat on now and I'll close the door quietly. _________________ Bob Hughes

Thanks for the kind compliments.. those comparisons are very flattering!
Bob - funny you should mention that!! It's not something I'm going to rush into doing, but yes, If it comes to the point where I feel the OO9 isn't working, I had considered just that. Apart from anything else it could be an interesting exercise ..
ooh.. maybe after that it could be modernised and rationalised into a SLT.. and then eventually become a bit waste ground or housing estate!
OK.. maybe a step to far! For now Winkford is dozing in the 1930s and optimistically narrow gauge _________________ Martin Hogg
