try..phosphoric acid.

Commonly used as an automotive rust treatment, it is a clear, but smelly liquid......[try Herr Von Halfords, or whatever you have over there?}

it is used to convert rust into something less nasty...

Jenolite was the trade name I used to use...also good for cleaning gas plugs on SLR rifles....

brush on to work, then apply solder and iron...careful of breathing the fumes, they will make your eyes water.

That should get you started, even though currently your shops are shut?

Okay, thanks for that. I found some soldering putty which I'm told has the same effect, then lost my soldering iron.

I'l see what I can do after Chistmas. Between job hunting...
